Many years back when i was still in my final year of my “fantastic” Interior Design 4 years course, i was cracking my head and stressed like hell as to what project should i be doing for my final year project presentation. And then an idea strike me. Since my sister was working part time in Novotel Sydney during that time, might as well request to get their floor plans!!! Finally i managed to get their “precious” floor plans. And after rounds and rounds of head cracking ( again) to finally figure out what i would like to do, i finally came up with an idea of having an input of the concept of “Food Street” into their already existing coffee house.
Don’t ask me to show you my presentation, because i don’t know where I’ve chucked them. Hehehe
Anyway, they have a huge area for their coffee house, covering almost the whole of ground floor! Ain’t i lucky? And so i worked my butt off and came up with this fantastic idea of having a food street filled with small little individual stalls, each with their own unique design matching into the overall theme, serving international food. And guess what? Non of the judges showed interest in my idea! Can you believe it ? They said they didn’t understand what i was trying to do, what’s the point of having so many stalls when you can fit them all onto a buffet counter…..bla bla bla. As i do respect them, i decided not to start with any F word on them. Despite them hating the idea so much, i also need to thank them for not failing me!!
So anyway, soon after my fantastic idea was thrown out of the window, i decided i will never think about it anymore, maybe for the rest of my life?
And guess what? Many years later, you can see “food street” concepts in almost any big shopping malls in Singapore….WTF?

Try going to any food republic outlet in either Singapore or the Pavilion KL and you will know what i mean. Food Republic is basically a restaurant with a heavily embedded ” Themed Food Street” concept. Out of the many outlets they have in Singapore, each of them carries a different concept. The 1st Food Republic photo above is situated in Wisma Atria, Orchard Singapore. Their concept for this particular outlet, is more towards the old Penang market street concept. Signage with huge Chinese calligraphies are hanging everywhere, and you can find mostly local food like Kaya& Toast, Malay food, Chinese noodle shops, shops that sell brewed soups, stuffs like that.
The next set of Food Republic photos with a more goth theme is situated in Suntec City, Singapore. I love this particular outlet so much!! Did i tell you i couldn’t resist places with a heavily themed fairytale concept? Even though this is not exactly a fairytale concept, but i love the dark mystical feel of the place, and the over-sized bookshelves. And i think i can stay in this place for hours without getting sick of it.
And talking about this trend, recently there’s a new food street outlet opening @ Tampinies 1 Singapore, called Wanpuku, a Japanese Gourmet street concept! And i was thrilled by it!! During my recent trip to Singapore, I was glad to have a meal there with my sis. As much as i would like to take a few pictures around the area, people there seems to be a bit hostile. So, only managed to take a few photos around where i sat. Despite the let down, i managed to find some pics of the restaurant on google image!!

This is the entrance to the restaurant!! Vibrant with colours doesn’t it ? Manpuku in Chinese character is 萬富, i think… hehe..

Individual stalls selling different types of Japanese food. As the poster on the left is showing something like a Ramen stall.

I really love this cherry blossom sitting area!! I was there to meet my sister the other day, so before my sister arrived, i walked around to look for a place to sit. To my surprise, almost every good spot was being taken !!! These people really kiasu one i tell you! In the end me and my sis has got no choice but to sit @ a table tucked away in a corner!!! Sigh~~

Another view of the cherry blossom seating area.

And i took this photo myself!! Yay!! This stall is just right next to where we were sitting. As you can see, it serves Tamago rice ( Egg fried rice). But we didn’t order from them.

Another view of the Tamago rice stall!!

Love the street lamps!!
And this is what we ordered…….
Seafood pancake!!!

The taste?? Yummy yum!!!

Another view of the yummy seafood pancake!
We also ordered some sushi!!

But the taste? So so only…..
And so after having the seafood pancake and the sushi, we were actually quiet full, but then still cannot resist the deliciously looking dessert!!
So we ordered the grapefruit cake!!!

And it was YUMMY!!! Slurp slurp~~~
So, after experiencing the many food street concept dining….i was kinda glad to know this kinda dining experience does work and it’s actually working tremendously well!! A big Boooo to all the old fashioned folks back then! Oh, for those that would like to experience the food street concept dining experience, without having to go all the way down to Singapore, you folks can try the food street @ ground floor Starhill, Kuala Lumpur. I would say that will be a more poshed up food street!! But well worth a visit!!!
So, are you ready for a food street dining experience?
